New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking a probe into the violence and arson in several states of the country after the Centre announced the Agnipath scheme for army recruitment. The apex court said that the Delhi high court is hearing the application related to the Agnipath scheme, so there is no point in hearing the petition here.

In fact, advocate Vishal Tiwari, in his petition, had urged the apex court to set up an SIT to investigate the violent protests in many parts of the country against the central government's new military recruitment scheme 'Agnipath'. On June 16 this year, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the Agnipath scheme for recruitment of soldiers below the rank of commissioned officers in the three services of the armed forces. Under this scheme, the soldiers joining the three services will be known as Agniveer. It is also called the 'Tour of Duty.' As soon as this scheme was announced, there were violent protests in many parts of the country.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari, in his petition filed in June this year, had said that "angry candidates" had burned at least 20 bogies of the New Delhi-Bhagalpur Vikramshila Express and the New Delhi-Darbhanga Bihar Sampark Kranti Express at Lakhisarai and Samastipur stations and blocked highways in the state of Bihar. Such was the intensity of the protest that the East Central Railway had to cancel 164 trains. A large number of passengers were seen stranded at many railway stations including Patna Junction. Referring to several such incidents, the petitioner had sought an SIT probe, which was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
