Why Google Is Ending This Feature: Understanding the Company's Significant Move
Share:

Google introduced the Nearby Share feature as the default sharing tool, allowing users to share files, photos, and other multimedia from one Android device to another. This feature was unveiled by the company in 2020. However, over the years, Google seems to have decided to rebrand the feature, possibly influenced by the popularity of Apple AirDrop and Shareit.

Not Gaining Popularity:
Despite Google's hopes for Nearby Share to become as popular as Apple AirDrop, it appears that the feature has not gained the expected level of popularity.

New Name – Quick Share:
In a bid to enhance the feature's recognition and appeal, the company has decided to change its name to Quick Share. This new name is expected to provide users with a clearer understanding of the feature and make it more memorable.

Name Change with Update:
According to reports, the news of this name change comes with the version 23.50.13 update of the Google Play Services app. Following this update, Nearby Share will be rebranded as Quick Share.

Logo Change:
Not only will the name change, but the logo of this feature will also undergo a transformation. A screenshot reveals that there will be changes in the dashboard interface, sending screen, and quick settings.

Samsung's Usage of the Name:
It's worth noting that Samsung also uses the name Quick Share in its One UI. However, there is no information on whether Samsung will adopt Google's rebranded feature in the future.

Feature Availability on Pixel:
Currently, these changes seem to be visible only on Google Pixel phones that have received the latest Google Play Services app update.

Release Date:
It is unclear when this rebranded feature will be available on all devices. The timeline for its release on non-Pixel devices is yet to be announced.

In summary, Google has decided to rebrand the Nearby Share feature to Quick Share, aiming for increased user recognition and engagement. The changes include not only the name but also a new logo and interface adjustments. While currently observed on Pixel phones, the timeline for the feature's availability on other devices remains uncertain.
