Bollywood's famous veteran actress Jaya Bachchan is celebrating her birthday today. Jaya made her debut as a lead with the 1971 film Guddi. Born on April 9, 1948, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Jaya Bhaduri completed her schooling and worked in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Mahanagar (1963) at the age of just 15. Subsequently, Jaya appeared in two Bengali films Suman and Dhanyi Maye.  

Jaya Bhaduri first appeared in Bansi Birju with Amitabh. Soon after, the two appeared together at a glance. After the film Zanjeer became a hit, Amitabh wanted to go to London with Jaya to celebrate. But his father put a condition that if he wants to go with Jaya, then he has to get married first. Amitabh agreed and both of them got married on June 3, 1973. They have two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Jaya Bachchan was pregnant during the shooting of the 1975 film Sholay. Jaya appeared in the film Silsila after marriage, but she stopped working in films after the birth of her daughter. After a break of 17 years, she made an acting comeback with Hazar Chaurasi's mother. Then Jaya appeared in films like Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Laga Chunari Mein Daag, Drona.

In 2004, Jaya contested from Samajwadi Party and won. In 2006, Jaya became a Rajya Sabha member. In 2008, while encouraging Priyanka, who was speaking in the Hindi due to the promotion of the film Drauna, Jaya had said, "We are the people of Uttar Pradesh, so talk in Hindi, people of Maharashtra are sorry." Raj Thackeray criticised her statement and said that if  she does not apologize, then all Bachchan's films will be banned. When Jaya did not apologize, the theater started being vandalised after the release of Amitabh's film The Last Lear. Finally, Amitabh Bachchan apologized in exchange for Jaya.
