New Delhi: Poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who advocated a separate country for Muslims in the form of Pakistan, has been removed from the Delhi University (DU) syllabus. In this regard, the Academic Council of DU passed a resolution on Friday (May 26). The council says that the curriculum will teach about national heroes.
DU Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh has said that those who have the foundation to break India should not be in the syllabus. "Iqbal had written taranas in support of the Muslim League and the Pakistan movement. The idea of partition of India and the establishment of Pakistan was first mooted by Muhammad Iqbal. Instead of teaching such people, we should teach about our national heroes. DU officials said they will inform the executive council of the university about iqbal's removal from the chapter titled Modern Indian Political Thought in the 6th semester of BA. The Council is scheduled to meet on June 9, 2023 and will take its final decision."
The resolution was passed at DU's 1014th academic council meeting. There are a total of 11 chapters in the syllabus. These include chapters related to the thoughts of personalities like Raja Rammohan Roy, Ramabai, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhimrao Ambedkar. Iqbal also has a chapter in them. It has been asked to add a chapter on Savitribai Phule.
