Sri Hari Kota: With its Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) intends to study the Moon's dark side or permanently shadowed regions. The upcoming lunar expedition, which appears to be moving along more quickly lately, was made possible by the space agency's collaboration with Japan. A Chandrayaan-3 launch is anticipated for June, so ISRO is also getting ready for that.

The side that faces away from the Earth is referred to as the far side, also known as the dark side, of the Moon. In 2019, China's Chang'e-4 mission became the first to set foot on the Moon's far side, making history.

ISRO is eager to look into the Moon's lesser-known side with the upcoming lunar exploration mission.Confirming the existence of water in the polar regions of the Moon will be the main objective of the LUPEX mission.Several scientific instruments from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and ISRO will be transported by the spacecraft.

There will be a rover and lander on the mission. ISRO will develop the lander system, and JAXA will construct the rover.A Japanese rocket will be used to launch the LUPEX mission. It will touch down at the south pole of the moon. Before the mission can be launched, there is still much work to be done. Recent developments indicate that the launch will take a few years.

A team from JAXA visited India recently to meet with ISRO scientists to talk about the LUPEX mission. The first face-to-face LUPEX working group meeting since 2019 was announced by JAXA on Twitter. During the discussions, the landing site analysis findings were shared in order to determine which Moon landing site was a "promising candidate."

According to the tweet, the future coordination policy was confirmed as well as the current status of ISRO's instruments on the rover.

Sharing knowledge about antennas on the ground that transmit and receive commands and telemetry was another topic covered at the meeting. A discussion about how to determine the locations of rovers and landers on the Moon also took place.

Regarding the LUPEX mission, ISRO stated in its annual report 2022–2023 that "India-Japan space cooperation is currently focusing on lunar exploration, satellite navigation, and earth observation."

According to the report, "ISRO and JAXA are specifically working on completing the phase-A study of the joint Lunar polar exploration mission; finalising the instruments to be accommodated in lander and rover."
