CHENNAI: M.K. Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, has directed law enforcement to take harsh action against those selling drugs and to seize their properties.

He urged the officers to be more vigilant near educational institutions.

The chief minister was addressing at a meeting of senior police officers and top police officials with an agenda to eradicate state's drug menace. He said, it is the duty of parents, teachers in elementary and secondary schools/ college faculty and administration to keep an eye out for signs that chidren are abusing drugs.

He als urged the police to monitor the entry of drugs into the state from other states. The Chief Minister also called up on psychiatrists and other medical professionals to raise awareness of the seriousness of drug usage among young people.

Stalin said that to stop drug abuse in the state, social and non-governmental organisations must also be involved, and that all of these actions must be adopted by the entire society. Only joint action can make Tamil Nadu a drug-free society, he said.

While Tamil Nadu fared better in terms of drug trafficking than Gujarat and Maharashtra, he said he would not rest till not even a single drop of an illicit substance was present in the state.

The Chief Minister said that the previous administration had not done anything to curb drug use in the state but that the current administration was concentrating on this menance.

He noted that Tamil Nadu was progressing well on all fronts and urged people and society to prevent the drug menance from impeding the state's development. He also stressed the urgent need for law enforcement agencies to take strict action.
