Tamil Nadu: To encourage more girls to pursue higher education, the Tamil Nadu government has launched an initiative offering Rs 1,000 into the bank accounts of girls students on a monthly basis. Around six lakh girls will gain from this initiative, according to Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan.
The finance minister announced the allocation of Rs 698 crore for this scheme when presenting the Budget for 2022-2023.
All girls in government schools from grades 6 to 12 will be paid Rs 1,000 till they complete their undergraduate degree, certificate, or ITI courses without interruption. Students would be eligible for this programme in addition to any other scholarships they may have.
Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme will be renamed Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme in recognition of the poor enrollment rate of girls from government schools in higher education.
