To catch up in EV sales by 2025, GM is in a dogfight with Tesla

As it considers shifting to top gear in the quest for the crown of personal electric vehicles, General Motors has only Tesla in mind. While the Hummer EV has revived the classic SUV, the automaker may still have a long way to go before catching up to Tesla in an all-American war.

Barra put on an optimistic front in a recent interview with CNBC, stating that GM will catch up to Tesla in terms of electric car sales by 2025. The majority of the push will have to come from current and future battery-powered items. “When we look at our portfolio, we have not only the Hummer and the Lyriq, but Mark Reuss mentioned that we're going to have an Equinox-sized product that'll be around $30,000, we have the Silverado E coming, a GMC product after that, and all the other products that we haven't announced yet,” he said "said he said "I'm at ease because when people get into these vehicles, they're blown away.""

Although having more items may increase your chances of success, it is not a guarantee. And pulling Tesla down won't be simple, especially when the electric vehicle behemoth has been setting records after records. Tesla set an all-time sales record in the most recent quarter. This despite semiconductor shortage-related woes that are challenging almost every major auto brand.

Having more cheap goods in the range might be one approach to boost sales - and hence prospects. Barra has already mentioned a $30,000 EV, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already announced plans for an EV that will be priced below the Model 3, which is now the most affordable Tesla.
