In Tokyo Olympics 2021, India have hope with wrestler Sandeep Singh Mann and Sonam Malik to qualify in Asian Olympics qualifying match. The continental event is the penultimate opportunity for Indian wrestlers to earn an Olympic quota for Tokyo 2020. In this expectation Wrestlers Anshu Malik (women’s 57kg) and Sonam Malik (women’s 62kg) guaranteed their places in the Indian contingent for Tokyo Olympics after entering the final of their respective categories in the Asian Olympic qualifiers here on Saturday.
Here it is to be noted that the top two in each weight category are eligible for the Olympic quota place. In the 57kg final, the 19-year-old Anshu will face Mongolia’s Khongorzul Boldsaikhan. Whereas , In the 62kg final, Sonam will face China’s Jia Long. Earlier in the 2019 World Championships, Vinesh Phogat had won a quota in 53kg category for Olympics.
Let us share that from India's first individual medallist (KD Jadhav, 1952) to the only double individual medallist (Sushil Kumar, 2008 and 2012), wrestling has been one of India's most successful sports at the Olympics. There will be additional pressure owing to the fact that there are fewer Olympic spots on offer overall (288 in Tokyo or about 16 qualifiers in each category as compared to 350 and 20 qualifiers in each weight division at the Rio Olympics). This means that should wrestlers not qualify at the Asian qualifiers, they will have just one more chance -- at the World Qualifiers in May.
