Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov expressed dismay, emphasizing that the missiles hit areas devoid of military infrastructure, specifically striking residences. He reported at least 10 damaged buildings, with ongoing efforts by rescue teams to navigate through the rubble. Terekhov shared on Telegram, "And there is plenty of rubble."
Ukraine's Emergency Services disclosed that one of the missiles struck a three-story building, previously housing a medical center.
Situated just 30km (19 miles) from the Russian border in Ukraine's northeast, Kharkiv has frequently faced bombardment since Moscow initiated a full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.
As news of the attack circulated, there was no immediate comment from Moscow. However, the Defence Ministry asserted that their air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed seven Ukrainian missiles and four drones over Russia's Belgorod region, approximately 80km (50 miles) from Kharkiv.
