A newly elected Trinamool Congress panchayat member was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police reported on Saturday, July 29.

Alongside the victim, another person who was accompanying him also fell victim to the assailants' bullets and is currently receiving critical medical care at a local hospital.

As the authorities begin their investigation into this heinous act, they are considering two possible motives: whether it was a consequence of political rivalry or stemmed from personal enmity.

The unfortunate event unfolded late on a Friday night when Maimur Gharami, a member of the Magrahat East gram panchayat, was returning home. Suddenly, he was confronted by the assailants, who unleashed a hail of bullets upon him. Shockingly, they also used a sharp object to ensure his demise, leaving no room for survival.

In a courageous attempt to aid Gharami, Shahjahan Molla, who was accompanying him, rushed to help but was also met with gunfire.

Both victims were rushed to Magrahat rural hospital and later transferred to Diamond Harbour Government Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, Gharami succumbed to his injuries, while Molla continues to fight for his life, currently under medical supervision.

It is disheartening to witness such violence, especially in the aftermath of the recently concluded three-tier panchayat elections in the state, where Trinamool Congress emerged victorious. This unfortunate incident adds to the series of reported deaths resulting from the poll-related clashes and unrest. The situation demands thorough investigation and appropriate measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent such tragic events in the future.
