Imphal: Tribute is being paid to Suman Swargiary, a rifleman of 46 Assam Rifles, who was martyred in a militant attack in Manipur on Saturday, November 13, 2021. The body of the soldier was brought to Guwahati from Jorhat on Monday morning. After which the body of the soldier is going to be brought to his village in Baksa district and he will be cremated there. In Guwahati, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta along with Assam Rifles soldiers and district officials paid homage to Suman Swargiary.

In Manipur, 7 people, including a commanding officer of Assam Rifles, his wife and son and four other personnel of the force have lost their lives in an attack with IED explosives and bullets in Churachandpur district. The mortal remains of all these soldiers are to be sent to their home district. In addition to Colonel Viplav Tripathi, four Assam Rifles soldiers killed in the attack were RFN Shyamal Das, RFN Suman Swargiyary, RFN RP Meena and RFN Khatnei Konyak.

According to the information, Col Tripathi was a resident of Raigad in Chhattisgarh, while RFN Das were a resident of Murshidabad in West Bengal. RFN Swargiyary hailed from the Baksa district of Assam. RFN Konyak was a resident of Mon district of Nagaland while RFN Meena was a resident of the Dausa district of Rajasthan. The mortal remains of RFN Konyak are to be flown by helicopter to their native place Nagaland.

Militant outfits PLA and MNPF take responsibility for the attack: According to information received so far, militants ambushed an Assam Rifles convoy in the Indo-Myanmar border village of Sehken at around 10 am on Saturday. The attack was taken responsibility by 2 banned militant outfits People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Manipur Naga People's Front (MNPF). PLA and MNPF sent congratulatory messages to those involved in the attack, but have mourned the death of the colonel's wife and child. This incident was the first major attack on the security forces since June 4, 2018, when a similar attack was carried out on an army convoy in Chandel district in which 18 personnel lost their lives and others were injured. Road Opening Patrol (ROP) personnel of the 6 Dogra Regiment of the Army were martyred. Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force in the country, founded in the British Rule in 1835. It is administratively under the Ministry of Home Affairs, but the 'Operational' control is carried out by the Indian Army.
