On January 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the new Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport terminal in Agartala, according to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The CM stated the Prime Minister will be accompanied by Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiradiya Scindia, while speaking at a Christmas gathering in Mariamnagar, West Tripura.

After Guwahati's Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Tripura's airport is the second busiest in North East India. In 1942, the airport was created as a military airfield on land donated by Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, the King of Tripura. In July 2018, the airport was renamed after him.

The new terminal is being constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore as part of a plan by the Airport Authority of India to expand airports in the North East. It will be able to transport 4-5 times as many people as the current one, which can only accommodate 500 people.

The present terminal has grown overburdened with 19 aircraft each day. Six bays, one hangar, 20 check-in counters, 5 custom counters, 10 immigration counters, an apron for six aircraft parking bays, provisions for link cabs, an inline baggage system, a solar power unit capable of handling most of the installation's power requirements, and a self-sustaining sewage treatment plant are all part of the new structure, which covers 25,000 square metres. It will also have small sculptures of Tripura's mammoth from the 7th century, as well as bas relief sculptures of Unakoti and Tripurasundari temple.

India's first full-body scanner will be installed at the airport. The terminal was supposed to be ready for Durga Puja last year, but it was postponed owing to the Covid-19 outbreak.
