The Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023 is observed to commemorate the historic day when Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya attained statehood on 21st January 1972.

History of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023: There are seven  states in the North Eastern part of India.  In its combination they are called “Seven Sisters”. Though the North East has always been a part of India not all these states attained statehood at the same time.

The North Easter region of India was made up of the hill districts, the North Easter Frontier Tracts (NEFT) of the North-Eastern borderland, the Princely States of Tripura and Manipur, and the Assam plains of the former Assam Province when it gained independence in 1947.

Manipur and Tripura received the status of Union Territories later in 1949, and on December 1, 1963, Nagaland was admitted as a state. The Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act of 1969 established Meghalaya as an independent state inside of Assam in accordance with the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. But it took some time before Meghalaya became a state.

The North East Reorganisation Act of 1972 allowed Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya to become independent states on January 21, 1972. The Mizo Accord of 1986 later led to the establishment of Mizoram as a full-fledged state in 1987.

When is the Foundation Day for Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya in 2023?

Every year on January 21st, the Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023 is observed. Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya split out from India on January 21, 1972, in accordance with the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972.

The Seven Sisters:  North Eastern India is divided into seven states. The Seven Sisters is the collective name for these seven states. Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur are among these seven states. Under the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972, Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya became fully independent states on January 21, 1972. Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya will commemorate their 51st Foundation Day this year with a lot of fanfare.

When were Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya formed?: In 1972, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura were granted full statehood through  the North East Reorganization Act 1972.
