Police lathi charge on traders for not wearing masks, 30 injured

On Wednesday, people were charged with lathi for not wearing masks in Tripura. Police said that Tripura State Rifles personnel lathi charged on traders for not wearing masks in the largest Maharajganj market. There are also allegations of traders not following other government guidelines in the market. SP Manik Lal Das of West Tripura district said that an inquiry has been ordered in this matter.

Regarding the matter, the SP told the news agency that "Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anirban Das will be in charge of the investigation and he will submit a report in the case as soon as possible". Secretary of Maharajganj Bazar Retail Vegetable Traders Association, Nakul Baidyanath said that about 30 traders were injured in the police action, and seven of them were given first aid at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital here.

In their statement, the officials further said that there are more than 400 stalls in Maharajganj market which have been shifted to another place to maintain social distancing. Baidyanath said that in protest against this illegal and inhuman action by the police, the traders have decided not to open their shops indefinitely.
