Oral arguments for the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump commence Tuesday. During his final days as US president, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump 232-197 on one impeachment article: "incitement of insurrection." Trump's historic second impeachment trial will commence today with Democrats seeking to hold him responsible for the deadly riots which broke out at Capitol Hill on January 6. With the beginning of the trial, the 74-year-old Republican will become the first US president to face two impeachment trials.
Meanwhile, lawyers of Donald Trump have lashed the impeachment case calling it an act of "political theatre" by Democrats, who they accused of exploiting the chaos and trauma of the riots for their party's gain.
Following the announcement of 2020 US Presidential election results, which declared Joe Biden the winner, Donald Trump remained defiant and refused to concede defeat for weeks.
Trump's legal team argues that he was simply exercising his First Amendment rights when he disputed the election results and suggests that he explicitly encouraged his supporters to have a peaceful protest and therefore cannot be responsible for the actions of the rioters.
In a statement, his legal team wrote, "Instead of acting to heal the nation, or at the very least focusing on prosecuting the lawbreakers who stormed the Capitol, the Speaker of the House and her allies have tried to callously harness the chaos of the moment for their own political gain,
"This was only ever a selfish attempt by Democratic leadership in the House to prey upon the feelings of horror and confusion that fell upon all Americans across the entire political spectrum upon seeing the destruction at the Capitol on January 6 by a few hundred people." It further read.
