NEW DELHI: Airports Authority of India's Tuticorin airport is undergoing major renovations as part of a Rs.381 crore project to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and the need for better services and connections. This work includes extending the runway to accommodate the operation of A-321 type aircraft and building a new apron, terminal building, technical block-cum-control tower, and fire station.

The new terminal structure, which has a floor size of 13,500 square metres, can accommodate 600 passengers at peak times.

Along with two aerobridges, car parking spaces, and a new approach road, the structure will be furnished with all contemporary conveniences for passengers.

The new terminal's intuitive form, which was inspired by the famed Chettinad cottages of the area, will give the southern region a distinctive architectural character and offer a new depth to the terminal's design. The architecture of the structure will make direct allusions to regional tradition and culture. The building's interiors use modern materials and textures to represent the colours and culture of the city. The new terminal will be an environmentally friendly structure with a four-star GRIHA rating.

The expansion of the airport's runway and its strengthening are also included in the project, which will prepare the airport for the use of A-321-type aircraft. The project also includes building a new fire station, isolation bay, A-321 aircraft parking bays, and an ATC tower-cum-technical block. Tuticorin is the only airport in southern Tamil Nadu that is located after Madurai.

Enhancing passenger services at the airport would not only satisfy local community demands, but will also encourage trade and tourism in Tuticorin and nearby communities like Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari. The airport's upgrade and expansion project is anticipated to be finished by December 2023.

The only airport in southern Tamil Nadu after Madurai is in Tuticorin. In addition to meeting the demand for improved passenger services, upgrading the airport will promote trade and tourism in Tuticorin and surrounding areas including Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari.
