TEHRAN: The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) said on its website that two new units at the Bushehr nuclear power facility will soon be connected to the national electrical grid.
The AEOI's Deputy Chief, Mahmoud Jafari, announced on Thursday that the organisation has resolved to send 1,000 MW of nuclear electricity to the nationwide grid in the near future, in full coordination with the Energy Ministry.
According to reports, Jafari quoted AEOI Chief Mohammad Eslami as claiming that since its start-up in 2011, the Bushehr plant had saved the country's power industry almost USD6 billion. He also stated that by 2041, the country intends to create 10,000 MW of nuclear power at the Bushehr power facility.
In September 2011, the Bushehr power plant, located 17 kilometres southeast of Bushehr in southern Iran and operated in collaboration with Russia, began providing electricity. Iran and Russia inked a collaboration deal in November 2014 to add the plant's second and third reactors, which were set to open in 2024 and 2026, respectively.
