In the Madhya Pradesh districts of Balaghat and Tikamgarh, two 17-year-old girls allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents after failing to pass the Class 12 board test, police said on Saturday.
On Friday, the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education announced the results of the Class 12 examination.
"Rajni Lilhare allegedly committed suicide by plunging into a well in Gudrughat village of Balaghat district on Friday night after failing in the English section of the board exams," Tirodi police station in-charge Chen Singh Uikey said. She had left her home, upset over not passing the exam, and was on the phone with her cousin when she leaped into a well, he added.The girl's cousin told the family after hearing her jump over the phone, said the official.
However, by the time Rajni's family arrived, she had already passed away, and the police had been notified, he said, adding that the body had been taken for a post-mortem.
According to Palera police station in-charge Mukesh Shakya, Reena Ahirwar hanged herself at her home in Mahendra Maheba hamlet, around 70 kilometres from Tikamgarh district headquarters. Reena, a Class 12 Arts student, took the drastic measure after failing English and Political Science papers, he added. "Reena's younger sister saw her hanging in a room at their home," Shakya added, adding that the girl's parents, daily-wage workers, are in New Delhi.
A case has reportedly been filed and further investigation is underway.
