NEW DELHI: A notorious criminal who regularly stole two-wheeled vehicles and then used them in robberies has been arrested by Delhi Police, an official said on Sunday.
Rahul Sharma, the defendant, is a 29-year-old who has previously been charged with theft and six counts of robbery.
Usha Rangnai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West), said that a team was formed to deploy anti-snatching pickets and to apprehend the suspicious individuals in order to reduce incidences of snatching and robbery in the North-West district. On Saturday, the team posted near Laxmi Bai College was checking vehicles when they seen a Scooty, which was coming towards them, taking a U-turn so as to escape. After a brief chase, the police sprang into action and apprehended the rider, Rahul "said the DCP.
Rahul was found to be in possession of a button-activated knife during a search, and the Scooty he was riding was found to be a stolen vehicle.
In accordance with Sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act, the police have filed a FIR and detained the suspect.
Rahul admitted after continuous questioning that he had been prowling the area looking for parked two-wheelers to steal and then use in robberies. In two robbery cases and under the Arms Act, he was eluding capture and on the run.
Further efforts are being carried out to track his possible involvement in other cases, the official said.
