The University Grants Commission (UGC) has set a deadline for all universities to appoint Ombudspersons and adhere to UGC Regulations by December 31, 2023. Those failing to meet this directive will see their names publicly disclosed by the UGC after the deadline.

In a recent announcement on December 5, the UGC highlighted the necessity for universities to establish Students Grievance Redressal Committees (SGRC) and appoint Ombudspersons as per the Regulations. Manish R Joshi, the UGC Secretary, expressed concern over non-compliance, stressing the gravity of the issue.

After providing ample opportunities for compliance, the UGC has decided to publish the names of non-compliant universities on its website post-December 31, 2023. Urging swift action, the Secretary has requested universities to appoint Ombudspersons and ensure compliance with UGC Regulations by the specified deadline. Universities are also asked to submit compliance reports via designated email addresses.

Furthermore, the notice outlines a provision for universities that wish to challenge their inclusion on the defaulter's list. They can send a representation to the UGC Secretary's address before December 31, 2023.

The UGC warns that continued disregard for these regulations will result in punitive action against the non-compliant universities.
