Kyiv: Ukraine's president claimed that early Monday, nearly eight months into the war that has already killed thousands, Russian-launched "kamikaze drones" attacked Kyiv.

Before the first explosion, which occurred around 6.35 a.m., air raid sirens were sounded in Kyiv, followed by sirens in much of the country.

The president's chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, posted on social media that a "kamikaze drone" had attacked the capital.
He continued, "The Russians believe it will help them, but it reveals their desperation.

“There is an urgent need for more air defense systems. More weapons are needed to fight the enemy and protect the sky.
The attack came just a week after Russia launched massive missile strikes on Ukraine's national capital and several other cities.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, the drone strike opened fire and damaged several buildings in the district's central Shevchenkivsky, and he advised residents to seek shelter.

The fire department is working. Many houses have been damaged. On Telegram, he wrote, "Medics are on the spot.
"We are rejecting claims regarding casualties."

Meyer also shared a photo of what he claimed to be the charred remains of one of the weapons known as the kamikaze drone, which can hover and wait for an opportunity to attack.

Despite Tehran's denial, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed last week that Iranian drones were used in Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in several Ukrainian cities.
In the biggest wave of attacks in months, Russian missiles landed in Kyiv and other cities on October 10.

The attacks resulted in at least 19 deaths, 105 injuries and widespread outrage.
On 11 October, Moscow launched additional small-scale attacks, targeting energy facilities away from the front in western Ukraine.

The attacks, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, were in retaliation for an explosion that damaged an important bridge connecting Russia to the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow had occupied.

Putin expressed satisfaction on Friday and said that "for now," there is no need for additional significant attacks against Ukraine.

Despite a string of humiliating losses, the Russian president insisted that Moscow was "doing everything right" in its nearly eight-month invasion of Ukraine.

Kherson, the main city of the region of the same name just north of Crimea, is getting closer and closer to Kyiv's forces in southern Ukraine.

The first important city to fall after the Kremlin launched an invasion was the city of Kherson. Kherson is one of four regions of Ukraine that Moscow recently claimed to be annexed.

New military support for Kyiv was announced by Washington on Friday "in the wake of Russia's heinous missile attacks on civilians in Ukraine."

More ammunition for the Hymer rocket system, which Ukraine has used to wreak havoc on Russian targets, was included in the new $725 million package.

This brings the total amount of US military aid provided to Ukraine since Russia's invasion on February 24 to US$17.6 billion.
