United Nations, September 5: The United Nations has allocated $4 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to assist Bangladesh, which has been severely impacted by devastating floods.

Joyce Msuya, the acting UN emergency relief coordinator, has directed the funds to support flood response efforts, which have affected nearly 6 million people in Bangladesh since late last month, according to the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric.

Currently, around 500,000 people have been displaced, taking shelter in more than 3,400 evacuation centers. Over 7,000 schools have been closed due to the flooding, affecting approximately 1.7 million students. The disaster has caused an estimated $156 million in losses within the livestock and fisheries sectors, as per recent reports.

"We, along with our humanitarian partners, are fully engaged and supporting the government-led flood response. We are also aiding local initiatives to provide assistance to the most vulnerable people and communities affected by these floods," said the UN spokesperson.

Bangladesh has faced four major climate-related disasters this year, including Cyclone Remal and the current flash floods, impacting nearly 13 million people. These disasters have affected approximately 30% of the country’s land.

The start of this year's monsoon season has been particularly challenging for people living in northern Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. The European Union (EU) is boosting its support to provide essential relief to those hardest hit by the severe weather, according to the Commissioner for Crisis Management.

In Bangladesh and India, the EU has allocated €1.2 million to assist the most impacted communities, ensuring they receive critical help during this difficult time.

Earlier in May, the EU also provided over 22.6 million rupees in humanitarian aid following a devastating hailstorm and heavy rainfall in Manipur. The assistance was aimed at delivering vital support to the most affected people in the hardest-hit areas.
