The UN mission in Sudan has completed the first round of negotiations with Sudanese parties aimed at resolving the country's political turmoil.
According to reports, the UN Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) said it would shortly create a summary document that emphasises important areas of agreement among Sudanese political factions on sensitive issues related to the transition to civilian administration.
The consultation procedure, according to Volker Perthes, leader of UNITAMS, is "useful" since it allows the mission to hear a variety of viewpoints and recommendations from Sudanese people. Perthes has been in meetings with Sudanese political parties and civic forces in the country since January 10, when UNITAMS initiated an intra-Sudanese political process to end the country's political crisis.
Sudan has been in a political crisis since Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Sudan's transitional Sovereign Council chairman, announced a state of emergency and dissolved the Sovereign Council and government on October 25, 2021.
Since then, opposition parties have staged frequent major protests in Khartoum's capital and other places, demanding civilian government.
