GENEVA: The head of the UN human rights office, Volker Turk, on Thursday called for an end to the "unnecessary" use of force against Iranian protesters during an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council.

In a specially convened meeting, the UN's top human rights body was debating whether to launch a high-level international inquiry into the brutal suppression of widespread protests in Iran.

Turki claimed that Iran was embroiled in a serious human rights crisis in his first appearance before the council since taking up his new post.

He declared, "The use of excessive and disproportionate force must stop. The traditional attitudes and fortress mentality of those in positions of power are ineffective. In fact, they make things worse."

We are currently facing a serious human rights crisis.
Turk claimed that activists seeking change in Iranian society are doing so with extraordinary bravery.

I beg the authorities to pay attention," he said.
The use of live ammunition, birdshot and other metal pellets, tear gas and batons was reported by the security forces.

Reliable sources claim a conservative estimate of the number of deaths is more than 300, including at least 40 children. This must change.

We estimate that approximately 14,000 people, including children, have been detained as a result of the protests. This amount is shocking.

According to official sources, he claimed, at least 21 people who were detained in connection with the demonstrations are currently on death row, including at least six for enmity against God and corruption on earth. Got death sentence.

Turks claimed that the claims were made to discredit the protesters and portray them as enemies and puppets of foreign governments.
"It's a useful narrative. It's the standard story of tyranny that we've seen throughout history.

According to Turki, one of the main issues in Iran is continued impunity for human rights violations, which fuels unhappiness and mistrust.

Therefore, I demand that the investigation into the alleged violation of human rights be independent, fair and transparent in accordance with international standards.

Turk continued, "I demand that the authorities immediately stop using force and intimidation against peaceful protesters. In addition, a moratorium on the death penalty and the release of all those detained for participating in peaceful protests." It's important to release."

Change will always happen. Meaningful reform is the only way forward.
