New Delhi: Sushil and Gopal Ansal, the main accused in the UPhaar fire case, have been sentenced to 7-7 years in prison for tampering with evidence. The Patiala House Court has also imposed a fine of 2.25 crore rupees along with a sentence of 7-7 years in jail for tampering with evidence. In fact, on October 8, the Patiala House Court found five people, including sushil and gopal ansal brothers, guilty of tampering with evidence in the Uphaar cinema fire case.
The court had convicted ansal brothers as well as a former court employeedinesh chand sharma and PP Batra and Anup Singh in the case. A FIR was registered in the case on the order of the Delhi High Court, registering a case of offence under sections 120-B, 109,201 and 409 of the IPC. On June 13, 1997, there was a fierce flare-up at the Gift Cinema Hall in Delhi during the screening of Hindi film Border. 59 viewers lost their lives in the fire that caught the cinema hall.
Investigations revealed that the way to and from cinema halls was narrowed by installing additional seats. During the hearing of the case, the court files were tampered with by threatening the petitioners on the Ansal brothers and conniving with the court staff. Pages were torn from files and disappeared. The case was filed in court by Neelam Krishnamurthy, president of the Gift Tragedy Victims Association (AVUT).
