NEW DELHI: World's top women's tennis player Serena Williams to set a record at the US Open. The 37-year-old Serena will take on Maria Sharapova of Russia in the first round of the Flushing Meadows. She lost to Naomi Osaka in last year's US Open final. Top ranked defending champion Osaka said, "Certainly I will watch this match. "Everyone in New York would like to see this match," Serena wants to win her 24th Grand Slam singles title to equal Margaret Court's all-time record.
She will face second-ranked French Open champion Ashley Barty in the quarterfinals. Serena has not won a Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open. She lost to Osaka at the US Open last year and suffered a defeat in the last two Wimbledon finals, which she defeated Romania's Simona Halep last month. Barty, Osaka, Halep and third seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic would also seek their first Grand Slam.
Serena has not played since retiring in the WTA Toronto finals due to back pain that led to Canada's Byanka Andrescu winning the title. Many young players will be hoping to break the dominance of the men's tennis 'Big Three' but Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will continue to be strong contenders for the US Open. They will have young players in front of them.
