Last Saturday, US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone about the situation in Ukraine. According to a White House statement and the Kremlin, the two presidents addressed the situation in Ukraine and associated security problems during the discussion, which last about an hour. Biden told Putin that "although the United States is prepared to engage in diplomacy," it is "equally prepared for other scenarios," according to the White House.

According to Sputnik, a Kremlin adviser, Yuri Ushakov, Russia has not received a serious response from the US on security guarantees. Russia will respond to the US and NATO on security assurances soon, according to Ushakov, who added that the two presidents promised to stay in touch.

Direct talks between the US and Russia have generated little visible progress, with the Kremlin claiming that the White House failed to address critical security issues and the Biden administration repeatedly warning Putin's government that if it invaded Ukraine, it would face harsh economic sanctions.
