WASHINGTON: A State Department spokeswoman said the US strongly supports giving Covid-19 vaccinations to North Korea and urged Pyongyang to collaborate with the international community to inoculate its populace against the virus.

North Korea stated 18,000 persons with fever were found on Thursday alone, prompting the remarks. Six people died on that day, according to the report, with one of them testing positive for the Covid Omicron form. In an email, a Department representative said, "We notice the media reports regarding the outbreak of Covid-19 in the DPRK," referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.  "We are concerned about how this may effect the North Korean people," the official stated.

On Wednesday, North Korea released the first-ever report of a Covid-19 case.

\Since late April, more than 350,000 people have been diagnosed with a fever, according to the country's government. "The United States strongly supports and encourages the efforts of US and international aid and health organisations to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19 in the DPRK, as well as to provide other forms of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable groups in the country," a State Department spokesperson said, adding that Pyongyang should engage with such organisations to promptly vaccinate its citizens.

North Korea has so far refused to receive millions of doses of the Covid-19 vaccine suggested in the COVAX worldwide distribution programme, claiming to be coronavirus-free and enforcing stringent border controls against the pandemic for the past two years.
