Uttarakhand Launches Online Portal for Marriage and Live-In Registrations

Uttarakhand is set to introduce a digital web portal for the registration of marriages, live-in relationships, wills, and succession instruments, following the passage of a new law by the state assembly.

This initiative is part of the rules developed by the UCC implementation committee, which is led by former bureaucrat Shatrughan Singh. The committee recently held its final meeting in Dehradun.

“We have recommended methods that will allow individuals to draft and even modify their wills and succession documents online from the comfort of their homes,” said Manu Gaur, a member of the UCC rules drafting committee.

The Uttarakhand UCC web portal will integrate with other government websites, allowing it to access data related to marriages, deaths, births, and divorces.

The bill to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand was passed by the BJP government just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Earlier this year, the bill received presidential assent, making Uttarakhand the first state in India to implement the UCC.

The finalized draft rules will be sent to the Pushkar Singh Dhami government for official notification.

If any applicants are minors, or if at least one of them is a minor, their parents or guardians will receive a notification via text message. “Aadhaar will play a crucial role here, as accurate information must be provided. The intention is simply to inform parents,” said the official. “The registration is purely for record-keeping; no one else in the state will have access to this information, so concerns about privacy are unfounded.”

A member of the committee noted that the Pushkar Singh Dhami government has directed that the entire process remains faceless to avoid causing any inconvenience to applicants. The same portal will also facilitate marriage registrations.
