With new COVID-19 cases reducing and Vellore reporting no fresh fatalities, Health officials are closing down three COVID care centres in the district and also special COVID wards in two hospitals, official sources said.At Present, a couple of COVID patients are being treated at the Vellore Government Pentland Hospital. “Once they are discharged, we plan to close the COVID treatment ward there,” said a senior Health official. With the ESI Hospital’s COVID ward also being closed, officials plan to use only the main Vellore Government Medical College Hospital to treat fresh cases, the official added.

No COVID death was reported in Vellore district since December 5. The statistics as of Wednesday reveal only 110 active cases, 338 deaths and 19,247 discharges, officials said. Officials stated that the reason for the reduced number was the continued high-intensity testing, ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 tests per day. “We have no dearth of resources, only of patients,” a Health official added.

Similar situation has been reported in Tiruvannamalai district where no fresh COVID fatalities were registered after December 5. The district experienced a steep spike in the initial stages of the pandemic due to the Chennai Koyambedu cluster as most daily wage earners there were from this district. But, sustained action including reporting of clandestine entry into the district by the village vigilance committees resulted in the district recording 18,564 discharges, with 277 deaths and only 110 active cases.
