Vice President mentions Malaysia, Tonga devastation in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: M. Venkaiah Naidu,  Vice President as well as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, spoke about the devastation in Malaysia and Tonga, which were recently affected hard by excessive rain and the Tsunami, respectively, and conducted a minute of silence in honour of those who died in these unfortunate tragedies.

"Hon'ble Members, between December 17 and 19, last year, Malaysia was hit by severe torrential rains, causing severe flood calamity in several parts of the country," Naidu said. "It was one of the most devastating floods in Malaysia in a hundred years, causing 70,000 people to be displaced and reportedly 50 people to lose their lives." He went on to say that the record floods had caused considerable damage to people's property and livelihoods.

He went on to say that on January 15, 2022, a large underwater volcanic eruption near the Tongan capital of Nuku'alofa generated 1.2-1.5 metre high Tsunami waves, bringing flooding throughout the island kingdom of Tonga. "The country is supposed to have suffered severe infrastructural damage, and the eruption and tsunami are said to have affected more than 80% of the country's total population,"
