Chandigarh: On the morning of 1st January, the body of Arjuna Awardee DSP Dalbir Singh was tragically discovered near a canal in Basti Bawa Khel, Jalandhar's outskirts. The discovery led to an immediate investigation, which culminated in the arrest of Vijay Kumar, an auto-rickshaw driver and alleged drug addict.

The arrest came about after investigators found DSP Dalbir Singh's service revolver and bullets in Vijay Kumar's possession. Further inquiries revealed that the tragic incident occurred following a dispute between the victim and the accused over a ride home.

Sources indicate that DSP Dalbir Singh had left his residence accompanied by three acquaintances. His last known location was near the local bus stand. His body, bearing several injuries and a fatal gunshot wound, was found the next day. An identification card near the scene allowed authorities to ascertain his identity.

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma elaborated on the events leading up to the arrest, stating, “Vijay Kumar, the apprehended auto-rickshaw driver, is believed to have had a disagreement with DSP Dalbir Singh over the transportation fare. The altercation escalated, resulting in Vijay Kumar fatally shooting the decorated officer.”

Providing further insights, Punjab’s director general of police, Gaurav Yadav, shared, “The diligent efforts of the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police led to the swift resolution of this heinous crime within two days. Charges have been filed against the suspect under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act."

Initially, the incident was perceived as a potential hit-and-run accident. However, a subsequent postmortem examination at Jalandhar Civil Hospital revealed a bullet injury, leading to a more in-depth investigation. With the arrest of Vijay Kumar, the case takes a grim turn, highlighting the dangers and unpredictabilities of certain societal elements.
