HYDERABAD: The Telangana Assembly complex was in a tense state as Village Revenue Assistants (VRAs) tried to lay siege to the building in support of their demands.

Hundreds of protesters, including women, attempted to march on different routes toward the Assembly but were prevented by police. Scuffles occurred when protesters attempted to scale a few police barricades. Several dozen protesters were detained. To maintain control of the situation, the police also had to use force.

The government was under pressure from the VRAs to adhere to its promise to update their pay scale. They asserted that the government ought to decide on this issue during the current session.

Since 50 days ago, the VRAs have been on strike in protest of their demands for increased salary and job security. The past week saw the suicides of two VRAs.

The police stopped the protesters at Tank Bund, Ravindra Bharati, Telugu Talli flyover, and nearby places after they began their march from Indira Park. The police urged the protesters to disperse since rallies, meetings, and other gatherings are prohibited in light of the situation.

The VRAs attempted to ignore the prohibition orders, though. A tense scenario resulted from this. Cops had a hard time keeping the protesters under control.

Later, a delegation from the VRAs was permitted to meet with Minister of Industry and Municipal Administration K T Rama Rao on the grounds of the Assembly. He gave the delegation the assurance that the government will positively take into account their demands.
