London: Glenn McGrath, a legendary Australian speed bowler, thinks opener David Warner has atoned for his part in the ball-tampering incident in 2018 and should be permitted to captain the team if he so chooses.

Following the "sandpaper-gate" affair during the third Test of the series against South Africa at Newlands, three Australian cricketers -- then-skipper Steve Smith, Warner, and Cameron Bancroft -- were suspended from competition.
In addition to Warner's lifelong ban from leadership roles, Cricket Australia (CA) also imposed a maximum one-year penalty on the trio. Warner can now skipper the team again because of a recent change in CA policy, and McGrath thinks Warner is deserving of the opportunity.

McGrath told Daily Mail Australia, "I think the way Cricket Australia has handled the problem has left the door open for Warner (to become captain in any format). "I believe Warner, Smith, and Bancroft have already paid a price.

However, McGrath believed that the controversy would leave a lasting mark on Australian cricket.
