AL Hek, a former Health Minister and advisor to the Chief Minister, has stated that if all of the health department's needs are not revised as soon as possible, it will be impossible to control a third wave of COVID-19 with keeping in mind the new variant Omicron.

After several people were infected with the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, which is supposedly more contagious than the Delta variant, Hek made the statement. "There were many things that needed to be rectified in the health department even during my stint as health minister," Hek told The Sentinel. "We need to make sure everything is in place and all standards are completed, having in mind COVID-19 and the increase of cases in the recent few of weeks."

He also stated that because the virus will be there for some time, COVID-19 hospitals, rather than improvised hospitals, are urgently needed. The Centre has also requested that several state governments build COVID-19 hospitals, as cases of the new Omicron strain are on the rise.

"Makeshift hospitals are useless," he added, adding that the government should focus on the health sector now because "we need to be ready for the third wave."
