The West Bengal government has requested people to perform Kali Puja and celebrate Diwali festival without bursting firecrackers in order to maintain the air quality which if polluted is hazardous to the COVID-19 patients. WB chief secretary appeals everybody's cooperation. Post-meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee, Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said No procession will be allowed during the immersion of the Kali idols.

The Centre government has pointed West Bengal as one of the four states with increase in the coronavirus infections in the past one month from October 3 to November 3, the state government claimed that the situation is improving. Puja pandals are allowed to open following strict COVIOD-19 management protocols. The discharge percent in WB is 88.59. Following many other states/UTs in India, Odisha also banned the sale and use of firecrackers across the state from November 10 to 30, the festive season to keep the air pollution in control which can aggravate health conditions of COVID-19 patients.

Chief Secretary A K Tripathy issued the  direction to prohibit sale and use of firecrackers in all parts of the state from November 10 to 30 because Deepavali and Kartik Purnima the festivals which Odisha people celebrate falls between these days on November 14 and 30 respectively. The order said, "Any person found violating this order shall be punished under the provision of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other relevant laws".
