Bengal did not attend Home Ministry meeting on NPR

New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has convened a big meeting today amid the controversy over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The National Population Register (NPR) is being discussed in this meeting. The census authority, secretary of all the states except Bengal has attended the meeting. No West Bengal official has participated in this meeting. In writing on behalf of West Bengal, it has been said to boycott this meeting.

On the issue of NPR, CAA, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is continuously running the movement. Before the NPR process begins, the Union Home Ministry wants to meet all the states and formulate a strategy. The census is being discussed in detail in this meeting to be led by Union Home Minister Nityanand Rai, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla. The Chief Secretary and Census Director have attended the meeting on behalf of the state governments.

Mamata Banerjee is continuously opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, National Population Register. Amidst this protest, no official from Bengal attended this meeting. Recently, when PM Narendra Modi was on a tour of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee had told PM Modi that the Central Government would have to withdraw the CAA, NRC. Mamta has announced that this act will not be applicable in Bengal.
