Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the release of ₹197 crore in relief aid to approximately 2.46 lakh farmers in the state who were unable to sow paddy due to insufficient rainfall during the season.
The relief claims have been finalized under the Bangla Shasya Bima (BSB) scheme, a fully state government-funded crop insurance initiative, in which the government covers the entire premium amount, and farmers are not required to contribute.
Mamata Banerjee emphasized the state's commitment to supporting farmers affected by adverse weather conditions. Since the scheme's inception in 2019, the government has disbursed over ₹2,400 crore to 85 lakh farmers.
The Bangla Shasya Bima (BSB) scheme aims to provide financial relief to farmers who face losses due to natural calamities, ensuring they have a safety net in place during challenging agricultural seasons. In this case, the relief aid is directed towards farmers who couldn't cultivate paddy due to insufficient rainfall, a common issue that affects crop yields in the region.
