Bengal BJP president arrested while on way to a violence-hit area

Kolkata: Bengal BJP unit chief Sukantaa Majumdar has been arrested by the police on the second Hooghly bridge. Sukanta Majumdar was earlier put under house arrest at his home. From where he broke the police cordon and left. He was later arrested on the way to Panchla in Howrah. His arrest took place on his way to the violence-affected area of Howrah.

Protesters blocked roads and railway tracks at various places in West Bengal's Howrah district during protests on Friday against the alleged remarks made about Prophet Mohammed. The protesters also stormed the BJP office. Sukanta Majumdar had left to go to Panchla, first, he was put under house arrest. He was then later arrested.

An alert was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs for all the states and Union Territories before Friday prayers. The Home Ministry had issued an advisory in view of the tension created after Nupur's remarks. On Friday, South Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer K S Anand said that due to the protest by the protesters at Chengal station, traffic was affected due to parking of local and long-distance trains on the Howrah-Kharagpur road. After this, the passengers had to wait at various stations.
