Shimron Hetmyer of the West Indies has been replaced in the team for the T20 World Cup in Australia by Shamarh Brooks because he missed his rescheduled flight, the team announced on Monday. Hetmyer requested that his original trip be delayed for family reasons, which prevented him from missing the first of two T20 warm-up games against Australia on Wednesday.
"It was made clear to him that if there were any further delays ... we'd have no choice but to replace him in the squad, as we are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to prepare for this ... global event," director Jimmy Adams said. Brooks will fly out to Australia as soon as possible this week, Adams added.
On Wednesday at the Gold Coast and two days later in Brisbane at the Gabba, West Indies will face off against Australia. On October 17, they face off against Scotland in Hobart to open their World Cup campaign. Brooks has experience playing in international cricket, having participated in 11 T20Is for the West Indies in the previous calendar year. For the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League 2022, he has recently been in excellent form.
Brooks contributed significantly to Tallawahs' run to the CPL 2022 final with scores of 47, 109 not out, and 47 in the final three games. West Indies will compete against nations like Scotland, Zimbabwe, and Ireland after being placed in Group B for the first round. In the Super 12 stage of the competition, the top two teams advance.
