The Wrestling Federation of India has taken ownership of the Pro Wrestling League by signing a Rs 30 crore agreement with Pro Sportify and talks are on to resume the league later this year. The league started in 2015 and its 4 seasons were attended by big international stars. It is understood that Star Sports had expressed its desire to buy it for Rs 60 crore in 2019.
Sportify, however, has demanded Rs 70 crore. The WFI was in the role of a mediator, but in the Covid period, sports activities came to a halt and this case also went into cold storage. WFI received a royalty of Rs.1 crore for the first session which has since gone up to Rs.6 crore per session. A source has said that the agreement has been reached. WFI is going to pay the amount in instalments. Now the league is occupied by the federation. Asked how the federation arranged the money. The source has said that the amount from the royalty is going to be used. It is also learnt that Rs.4 crores of the last instalment is still due which is going to be paid soon.
An attempt is being made to restart the 6-team league. An official said the federation is in talks with 2-3 companies and a decision will be taken only after considering all the offers but plans are to start the league in the off-season this year.
