Know what is PFI, who instigated violence in UP over citizenship law

Lucknow: The name of the extremist Islamic organization, Popular Front of India (PFI) is in the discussions nowadays. The name of the PFI has come to prominence in the violence during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Uttar Pradesh. PFI started in 2006 as the main organization of the National Development Front (NDF) in Kerala.

According to the latest intelligence inputs shared by the Uttar Pradesh Police with the central agencies and the Home Ministry, during the opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act in UP, PFI has been active in the areas like- Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bijnor, Barabanki, Gonda, Bahraich, Varanasi, Azamgarh, and Sitapur. The report also mentioned that the PFI along with NDF, Manitha Niti Pasrai, Karnataka Forum for Dignity and other organizations have achieved a lot in several states and has been expanding its base in Uttar Pradesh for the last 2 years.

The report also said that strict measures initiated by the then Mayawati government forced the PFI members to leave Uttar Pradesh, but they have started making inroads in the state in the last 2 years. Since December 19, 28 people have been arrested in western UP's Shamli district, including 14 members of the PFI, who were allegedly trying to instigate mass people during CAA protests.
