Important research involved 524 people 65 years of age or older in Westchester County New York. At the beginning of the study, participants who did not have dementia visited a research center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for cognitive, psychological, and mobility tests. Where they had to complete a questionnaire to give information related to their personality. 62 percent of the total participants were women. Three years after the start of the study, the team involved in research found motorized cognitive risk in 38 people and mild cognitive impairment in 69 people.

Researchers wrote "These findings provide preliminary evidence of personality traits as predictors of the pre-dementia syndrome in old age. This raises the possibility that personality traits are at risk for or against protection syndrome.

Co-author Amliners Ayers of Albert Einstein College of Medicine stated that "we need more studies, our results provide evidence that personality traits play an independent role for risk or protection against the syndrome with increasing age, where a person has many minor problems with cognition, which is more in the elderly than a healthy person, but this problem cannot be defined as severe dementia."
