Between the lockdown and the Corona transition, India is all set to begin its new innings as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from January 2021. Elections are on June 17, 2020 for a two-year term. India started a campaign in favor of its claim on Friday. However, India is the only contender from the Asia-Pacific region, so its selection is a mere formality. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, while launching a campaign in favor of India's claim, also counted his priorities as a temporary member.

In his statement, he has said that India will try to resolve old and new disputes with other partners. India's emphasis will also be on promoting dialogue and discussion. The general process of international governance is being disrupted due to several reasons. Jaishankar said that India is a democratic country running on policy and law. The UNSC consists of 15 members. 5 permanent (China, America, Russia, Britain and France) while the remaining 10 temporary. Five new countries are to be elected as temporary members along with India. With a view to further strengthening his claim among developing countries, Jaishankar while referring to the challenges posed by Covid-19 said that the conditions that have arisen from it are absolutely unpredictable. India will help developing countries in the fight with Covid-19.

The Foreign Minister has also issued a draft paper in which India's future priorities have been presented as five s. These are respect, dialogue, cooperation, peace and prosperity. This includes effective campaigns against international terrorism and the need to replace the existing multilateral system as a priority. While pointing to agencies like United Nations, Jaishankar has said that, this is not in line with the changing reality of the world. For world peace, we need more dialogue, more respect for each other and respect for international law. For this, changes in the multilateral system are necessary. It is clear that the Indian Foreign Minister has pointed to the way Covid-19 is being accused of not being transparent on his well-known rival country China.
