Rekha was Born Bhanurekha Ganesan on 10 th October 1954, Her parents, Pushpavalli and Gemini Ganesan were actors. Her father had four children from his previous marriage. She never shared a good rapport with her father. She also had a sister, named Radha. When her mother passed away in 1991, only then did her relationship with her father started to improve. He passed away in 2005.
Rekha first had a short role in the film “Inti Guttu”, when she was a year old. Being an obese girl for most of her childhood days, she was bullied a lot by her classmates. Owing to some personal circumstances, she had to quit her studies in the 9th standard. This was when she began venturing into the industry to become a full-fledged actress.
The actress moved to Mumbai in 1969. Having no connections in the industry, Rekha struggled a lot during her initial days. Her first break came with “Saawan Bhadon” in 1970. Now the actress is very popular and has a big name in the industry but when she started her career the actress faced harassment.
The actress has mentioned this creepy episode when she was only 15 in her biography Rekha: The Untold Story, penned by Yaseer Usman, “The shooting of Anjana Safar was underway in Bombay’s Mahboob Studio. Raja Nawathe was the director and cinematographer of the film. In the very first schedule of the film, Kuljeet Pal (the director), Raja and Biswajeet (the lead actor) had hatched a plan, with Rekha as the unsuspecting victim. That day a romantic scene was to be filmed between Rekha and Biswajeet. Every last detail of the strategy had been decided before the shoot.”
It further stated , “As soon as the director Raja Nawathe said ‘action’, Biswajeet took Rekha in his arms and pressed his lips on hers. Rekha was stunned. This kiss had never been mentioned to her. The camera kept rolling; neither was the director ordering ‘cut’ nor was Biswajeet letting go of her. For all of five minutes, Biswajeet kept kissing Rekha. Unit members were whistling and cheering. Her eyes were tightly shut but they were full of tears.”
Rekha’s life was full of controversy the actress was also called ‘ A Man Eater Woman once’ but the actress continued living gracefully. She is one of the most popular actresses of her time. Who stand by her alone and fight with the circumstances and today the actress’s efforts were acknowledged by people inside and outside the industry.
