Bengaluru: Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh on Saturday made a shocking statement that when buffaloes can be slaughtered, why can't cows be slaughtered. Through his statement, the Animal Husbandry Minister has indicated that the newly elected government of the state will review the anti-cow slaughter law implemented by the previous BJP government in the state. He said that the government will hold talks regarding this law and then take a decision.

Venkatesh, who is also the animal husbandry minister in the Siddaramaiah cabinet, said the previous BJP government had brought a bill allowing slaughter of buffaloes, but said cow slaughter should not take place. The BJP government had also tightened its punishment. "When buffaloes can be slaughtered, why can't cows be slaughtered? This question naturally arises. We will discuss and take a decision. There has been no discussion in this regard so far."

Venkatesh said farmers face a lot of difficulties in taking care of old cows and burying them when they die. Citing his own example, he said a cow died in his farm house recently. They had to take the help of JCB to bury that dead cow. Earlier on May 25, 2023, Congress supremo Mallikarjun Kharge's son and Minister of State in the Karnataka government Priyank Kharge had also said that a decision would be taken after seriously considering the ban on hijab, cow slaughter ban and conversion law in Karnataka.

The previous BJP government had enacted the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Animals Act 2021. This Act prohibits the slaughter of animals in the state. Only sick cattle and buffaloes above 13 years of age were allowed to be slaughtered. However, the Congress has been opposing this law from the beginning.  Earlier in 2017, when the issue of banning cow slaughter was raised, the Kerala Congress protested against it by slaughtering cows on the middle of the road and gathering people and distributing beef to them.
