When will UP implement caste-based census? Mayawati

LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSE) Chief  Mayawati today, August 9, said that a caste-based census should be conducted across the country including in Uttar Pradesh.

Drawing a parallel with the recent endorsement of such an endeavor by the Patna High Court for the Bihar administration, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh asserted that while the demand for an analogous census gained momentum in UP, the ruling BJP appeared unprepared for its fruition.

Taking to Twitter, the supremo of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati, conveyed her musings. "Following the Patna High Court's full legalization of the caste-based census orchestrated by the Bihar government -- an initiative aimed at formulating a development strategy grounded in a precise evaluation of the socio-economic and educational standing of the OBC community, all eyes are now fixated upon Uttar Pradesh. The query that lingers is: when shall this indispensable process find its actualization within these borders?" Mayawati postulated that, akin to the imperative execution of the Mandal Commission's recommendations, a caste census is an imperious requisite for the nation's fabric.

Expounding further, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party underscored the quintessential significance of the caste-based census in facilitating social justice. This stratagem, she contended, serves as a conduit to assimilate the marginalized and underprivileged strata of society into the societal mainstream, engendering an overarching societal upliftment. A historical milestone occurred on August 1, as the Patna High Court adjudicated by dismissing all petitions that contested the legitimacy of Bihar's pursuit of a comprehensive caste survey.

The initiation of a caste-based census was actualized by the Bihar cabinet on June 2 of the previous year, in stark defiance to the Central government's reluctance towards such an enterprise. Anticipated to encapsulate an approximate populace of 12.70 crore distributed across an estimated 2.58 crore households situated in 38 districts, these areas are further subdivided into 534 blocks and 261 urban local bodies.
