New Delhi: World Health Organisation (WHO) Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has recently made a startling statement. In fact, in many areas of India, the sub-variants of the COVID-19 omicron, BA.4 and BA.5, are spreading rapidly. In a conversation, Swaminathan said, "This could be the beginning of a mini-corona wave. Corona cases are increasing rapidly in many states of the country, including Maharashtra. More than 7,000 cases were reported on Thursday.'' In such a situation, Swaminathan said, "All the variants that are visible right now are spreading much faster than the original Omicron BA.1 and it is also likely that it will weaken the immunity faster."

She also said that It is also being seen that there is a mini-wave of Corona every 4 to 6 months. However, the cases that are coming up at the moment are something like this. Apart from this, she said that it is necessary to follow all the protocols of Corona to deal with this variant, but now it has become necessary to track the variant as well. In the conversation, she also said that now the corona test has become available in the house itself.

In such a situation, there is a possibility that due to this, the cases are looking less. There is a need to keep an eye on patients admitted to hospitals right now. People at high risk, especially those above the age of 60 years, should be given a booster dose. Apart from this, he said that it is because of the BA4 and BA5 variants that the fifth wave of Corona has come to South Africa. However, the wave was relatively small.

A well-known virologist and professor at Christian Medical College, Vellore, said that it is clear that what we are seeing right now is a sub-variant of the omicron. It has the ability to re-infect people who have been previously infected. But people won't be seriously ill. Right now, the same people are in the category of those who have not been vaccinated or those who are suffering from any other disease.
