KABUL: Afghanistan's Taliban-led government said that the World Health Organization (WHO) will provide monkeypox test kits to the war-torn country, citing the virus's confirmation in 27 nations and almost 800 cases.

The Afghan health sector now lacks monkeypox testing tools, according to officials from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), as per reports.

"PCR machines were sent to the MoPH during the Covid-19 epidemic in Afghanistan. These machines aren't capable of detecting monkeypox "said Javid Hazhir, a spokesman for the Ministry, So far, no cases of monkeypox have been documented in Afghanistan.

The WHO noted in its latest report on Sunday that the 780 laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox from 27 countries indicated an increase of 523 cases (+203%) since May 29, when there were 257 cases recorded. However, no one has died as a result of the current monkeypox outbreak.

Monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis that can infect people. It is most commonly found in forested areas of Central and West Africa. According to the WHO, it is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is a member of the orthopoxvirus family.
